A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with severe injuries following an alleged attempted “beheading” on a Belfast street last night. Police later stated that a man in his 30s, believed to be Somali, had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The victim of a stabbing remains in a serious condition in hospital after what has been described as a brutal knife attack in Belfast.
Footage shared online appears to show an attacker straddling the injured man’s neck while holding a knife. The assailant repeatedly stabs the victim in the head before moving the weapon toward his neck, until members of the public intervene to stop the attack.
Witnesses can be heard shouting in the video: “He’s trying to cut his head off.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious knife-related assault in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast on Monday night, 8 June, shortly after 10:30pm. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson described it as a “deeply concerning assault” and said a critical incident had been declared, with investigations ongoing to establish a motive.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the incident was “sickening” and added that there is “absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets.”
