A Muslim resident at a Blackburn care home has expressed deep distress after unknowingly consuming a quiche that contained ham — a form of pork that is strictly prohibited in Islam. The incident occurred earlier this week at Linden House on Delph Lane, where the man, who is elderly and suffers from a debilitating condition that limits his mobility, says he was served the wrong meal despite repeated reminders about his dietary restrictions.

The resident, who asked not to be named, believed he was being served a cheese and onion quiche — a vegetarian option — and had even inquired whether the dish was halal before eating. However, after taking a few bites, he immediately sensed something was wrong.

“I felt quite disgusted, to be honest,” he said. “I have never eaten pork in my life. The moment I tasted it, I knew something wasn’t right. I started vomiting — I was so disgusted. This goes completely against my beliefs and my religion.”

Muslims are prohibited from consuming pork or pork-derived products under Islamic dietary laws. For observant Muslims, accidental ingestion can be deeply traumatic, not just physically but spiritually. The resident said that after realizing the presence of ham in the meal, he felt violated and humiliated.

The meal had been presented with beans covering the quiche, leaving him with no visual cue that something might be amiss. “Normally, they place the beans to the side, but this time they were poured directly over the quiche. I had no way to check what was underneath,” he said. “I was actually texting some friends and sent them a picture of my food before I started eating — just by chance. That’s when I later zoomed in and noticed the pieces of ham.”

The man, who has been staying at the care home for four months, said he has consistently requested halal or vegetarian meals and staff are fully aware of his religious dietary requirements. “They know this — it’s been made clear from day one. That’s what made this so upsetting. It shouldn’t have happened,” he added.

After raising the alarm, a care worker reportedly removed the meal, but the resident says he has yet to receive a formal apology from the management.

“I haven’t seen the manager. No one has come to speak to me or to say sorry. That’s the least they could do,” he said.

This incident has sparked concerns over the level of cultural sensitivity and food safety practices within the facility. Advocates for elderly care standards emphasize the importance of respecting religious and dietary needs, particularly in institutions serving vulnerable populations.

It remains unclear whether Linden House has launched an internal investigation or issued any formal statement in response to the incident. As of now, the resident continues to await acknowledgment and an apology.
