An asylum seeker living in the United Kingdom has been convicted of a brutal assault on a young woman in Cardiff, after following her from a nightclub and attacking her beneath a bridge in the city centre, a court has heard.
The horrifying incident took place in the early hours of May 12 last year. The victim, who had been out with friends, was walking home alone around 4 a.m. after leaving Pulse nightclub on Churchill Way. Unbeknownst to her, she was being followed by 33-year-old Fawaz Alsamaou, an asylum seeker from Syria who had been residing in Huddersfield.
As the woman made her way toward the Cathays area, her journey turned into a nightmare. When she reached the railway bridge near Salisbury Road, Alsamaou suddenly grabbed her by the neck, forcing her to one side beneath the bridge. What followed was an act of violence and humiliation—he placed his hand under her dress and groped her inappropriately, gripping her for nearly seven seconds before she managed to fight him off.
During the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on October 31, prosecutor Ms. Tabitha Walker told the court that the victim had shown remarkable courage in escaping the assault and immediately contacting the police. CCTV footage later helped officers identify Alsamaou as the attacker. He was tracked down and arrested in Huddersfield, where he had been living as part of the UK’s asylum system.
Ms. Walker read the victim’s powerful impact statement, revealing the long-term trauma she continues to endure as a result of the attack. “I’m always looking over my shoulder and thinking the worst,” the woman said. “At the start, I couldn’t work and I didn’t leave my house for two weeks. I feel uneasy whenever it’s dark outside.”
The court heard that the incident had left her emotionally scarred, stripping away her sense of security and independence. What was supposed to be a normal walk home turned into a life-altering ordeal—one that continues to haunt her.
Alsamaou now faces sentencing for his violent and predatory actions, which have reignited public concern about women’s safety and the handling of asylum cases involving criminal conduct in the UK.
