An independent MP has expressed opposition to a proposed ban on marriages between first cousins in Britain.
Iqbal Mohamed, MP for Dewsbury and Batley, addressed the House of Commons, stating that many people view family intermarriage as a "very positive" practice.
He highlighted that such marriages are often seen as a way to "strengthen family bonds" and provide families with greater financial stability.
While Mr. Mohamed acknowledged the "health risks" associated with these unions, he advocated for a "more constructive approach" by promoting "advanced genetic test screening" for couples planning to marry.
He also suggested implementing "education programmes" targeting communities where family intermarriage is prevalent and urged MPs to reject an outright ban.
Mr. Mohamed’s remarks came in response to Conservative MP Richard Holden’s efforts to introduce new legislation prohibiting first-cousin marriages. Mr. Holden presented his Marriage (Prohibited Degrees of Relationship) Bill to the Commons through a ten-minute rule motion this afternoon.
