A suspected Islamic extremist reportedly attempted to attack five prison officers using improvised weapons, including a sharpened plastic spoon, allegedly targeting them because they were not Muslims, the Old Bailey heard.
Aklakar Rahman, 38, is accused of carrying out multiple assaults on staff at HMP Swaleside in Kent and Belmarsh, a high-security prison in south London, during September and October 2022.
The court was informed that Rahman had a history of using makeshift weapons to target prison officers, often aiming for their heads and necks in apparent attempts to kill them.
At the time of the alleged attacks, Rahman was serving a life sentence for three previous attempted murders and causing grievous bodily harm in incidents that occurred at HMP Wayland, HMP Lincoln, and HMP Wakefield during the summer of 2017.
On September 23, 2022, while detained in HMP Swaleside's high-security segregation unit over suspicions that he was attempting to radicalize other inmates with extremist views, Rahman allegedly punched officer Lee Lassman in the face, shouted “Allahu Akhbar,” and stabbed officer Ludovic Barbier in the forehead with a pen.
As officers restrained him, Rahman reportedly continued to shout, stamp, kick, and attempt to bite them. He later allegedly punched officer Dale Marsden in the stomach and stamped on officer Ross Greig’s foot as they intervened to assist their colleagues.
The following day, Mr. Lassman, conducting a welfare check, allegedly discovered Rahman standing naked in his cell holding a sharpened three-inch piece of plastic. When officers tried to retrieve the weapon, Rahman reportedly attempted to stab officer Simon Lowman in the neck.
On another occasion, Rahman allegedly made a throat-cutting gesture with an improvised weapon, threatening, “I’m going to put this in your eye.”
After being transferred to Belmarsh prison, Rahman is accused of attempting to kill prison officers Elizabeth Franklin, John Clark, and Robert Salter on October 23, 2022. According to the court, the defendant threw a bin at two officers and then charged toward officer Franklin, shouting “death to kuffar” while stabbing at her head and neck. During the altercation, he allegedly injured the other two officers by cutting their necks before being restrained.
A senior officer who responded to the scene reportedly heard Rahman shouting, “I’ll kill you all. Die kuffars,” while still holding a weapon.
In a police interview, Rahman stated that he did not intend to kill anyone, claiming his actions were intended to provoke the officers and that his mental health was deteriorating.
