A Leeds councillor who previously celebrated the “end of white settler colonialism” in connection with the October 7 events has now been elected as the deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales.
Mothin Ali, who has often courted controversy for his outspoken remarks, defended what he described as the right of “indigenous people to fight back” in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. On the very day of the assault, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to declare that “white supremacist European settler colonialism must end,” a statement that sparked sharp criticism for appearing to justify violence.
Ali has made headlines before. Following his local election victory in 2023, he dedicated his win to “the people of Gaza,” a gesture he accompanied with cries of “Allahu Akbar,” a moment that was captured on video and circulated widely.
Despite his success in securing the deputy leadership position, Ali’s candidacy was not without contention inside his own party. During the campaign, members of the Green Party’s LGBTQIA+ caucus raised concerns after he failed to provide responses to a set of pledges distributed to all candidates. His silence on the matter fueled criticism that he was unwilling to engage with key issues raised by activist groups within the party.
