LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) – British counter-terrorism police have apprehended eight men, including seven Iranians, across two separate operations, officials confirmed. The interior minister described these as some of the most significant investigations in recent years.
On Saturday, five men—four of whom were Iranian nationals—were arrested in connection with a suspected plot to target a specific location. The Metropolitan Police in London did not disclose the site involved, but the arrests took place in West London and the towns of Swindon, Stockport, Rochdale, and Manchester. The nationality of the fifth man has not been disclosed.
In a separate operation on Saturday, three Iranian nationals, aged between 39 and 55, were also arrested in London. This second operation was unrelated to the first. The men were detained under the National Security Act, which was introduced in 2023 to address threats from foreign powers operating in the UK.
Searches are still underway at their residences, according to the police statement.
“These were two major operations that represent some of the most significant counter-state threat and counter-terrorism efforts we’ve seen in recent years,” said Interior Minister Yvette Cooper.
