A nurse who narrowly survived a brutal attack in a hospital waiting room has spoken of her shock and gratitude at being alive, describing her escape as a matter of seconds.

“I’m so, so, so lucky I’m still alive,” said Meg Lynch, 28. “And I’m incredibly lucky that I ran when I did.”

Ms Lynch, a district nurse, recounted how she was almost beaten to death while standing at a vending machine getting a drink. Without warning, she was struck several times on the head by a man wielding a crowbar, leaving her bloodied, bruised, and disoriented. Despite suffering multiple blows, she managed to flee the area and hide from her attacker, a decision she believes saved her life.

“I took a few hits to the head before I could get away,” she said, adding that the aftermath of the assault left her physically injured and deeply shaken. She was taken to a nearby accident and emergency department, where doctors conducted a CT scan and stitched her head wounds. “They had to sew my head back together,” she said.

The attack occurred at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, and left six people injured in total. A 20-year-old Afghan man was arrested at the scene after allegedly launching the assault when he was refused an appointment. He was initially held on suspicion of six counts of Section 18 wounding, as well as affray and criminal damage.

In an update issued this morning, Merseyside Police confirmed that the suspect has since been detained under the Mental Health Act. Officers also announced that high-visibility patrols would be deployed in the area to reassure staff and the wider community.

Reflecting on the incident, Ms Lynch said she remains unable to comprehend the motive behind the violence. “I honestly don’t know why this man did this to me and to other hospital workers,” she said. “We were just doing our jobs.”
