An Afghan immigrant living in Washington state has been formally charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing his wife in what authorities describe as an “honor killing.” According to reports from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the accused, 37-year-old Sayed Sadat of Auburn, believed his wife was engaged in an extramarital affair and acted on that suspicion in a violent and premeditated manner.
On the morning of November 23, Sadat contacted law enforcement and asked officers to come to his residence. When police arrived, he allegedly confessed to having killed his wife, 43-year-old Geety Sadat. The couple’s three young children—aged 6, 9, and 11—were inside the home at the time of the incident. Although they were present, investigators noted that the children were asleep and did not witness their mother’s killing. Officers safely removed them from the home and placed them under protective custody.
Documents reviewed by the Auburn Reporter indicate that Sadat was officially charged three days later. Investigators allege that he manually strangled Geety after becoming convinced she was having an affair with the husband of her niece—one of the only relatives she had in the United States. Geety was known to maintain close ties with her niece and her niece’s husband, often relying on them for emotional support. However, a subsequent investigation by the Seattle Times reported that police found no evidence whatsoever that she had been unfaithful.
During his confession, Sadat told officers that he had harbored suspicions about his wife’s fidelity for nearly a year and had repeatedly warned her about his beliefs. He claimed that, in his cultural background, killing a spouse suspected of adultery was considered normal, and admitted he had contemplated ending her life on multiple occasions, including in the days immediately preceding the homicide. He called police roughly 30 minutes after Geety’s death.
Sadat had moved to the United States from Afghanistan within the past three years and had no prior criminal history. He and Geety had married in 2013 in an arranged marriage in Afghanistan. Despite asserting that conversations between Geety and her niece’s husband were inappropriate, he reportedly failed to give investigators any clear explanation for why he believed they were engaged in an affair, relying instead on vague cultural justifications.
The King County Medical Examiner determined that Geety died of asphyxiation due to manual strangulation and ruled the case a homicide. Sadat allegedly told officers that he viewed the killing as an act of “honor,” claiming that his wife’s supposed infidelity had brought shame on the family. He also stated that he believed his niece’s husband should have been killed as well, but admitted he refrained because the man was larger than him and he did not know how to obtain a weapon.
