CAIRO, June 15 (Reuters) — In a significant and unprecedented development, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement publicly declared that it had launched ballistic missile attacks against Israel in full coordination with Iran. This marks the first time an Iranian-aligned proxy force has openly acknowledged joint military operations with Tehran, highlighting a deepening axis of confrontation against the Israeli state.
According to Houthi military spokesperson Yehya Sarea, the group targeted the central Israeli city of Jaffa within the last 24 hours, using a barrage of ballistic missiles. In a televised statement, Sarea emphasized that the attack was not an isolated act of retaliation, but a coordinated military maneuver carried out in partnership with Iranian forces.
“In solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine and Iran, this operation was executed in coordination with the Iranian military’s ongoing strikes against the criminal Israeli regime,” Sarea declared, underscoring a shared agenda between Tehran and its regional allies.
Earlier, the Israeli military confirmed that missile alert sirens were triggered in various parts of the country due to launches originating from both Iran and Yemen. This escalation comes amid an intensifying missile exchange between Israel and Iran, which began after Israel launched what has been described as its most extensive military offensive against the Islamic Republic on Friday.
That same day, Israeli officials reported that a missile fired from Yemen had landed in the city of Hebron, located in the occupied West Bank. Although the launch was attributed to Yemen, the Houthis have not officially claimed responsibility for that particular incident.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023—when Hamas initiated a surprise and deadly assault on Israeli territory—the Houthis have consistently launched missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel. While the vast majority of these have been intercepted, the Yemeni militia has repeatedly stated that its actions are acts of resistance in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
This latest revelation of direct coordination with Iran could mark a turning point in the regional conflict, raising concerns about broader geopolitical repercussions and the potential for a more unified and aggressive front against Israel.
