On Tuesday morning, authorities issued a formal press release announcing the arrest of a “23-year-old German” suspect. When contacted for clarification, a spokesperson for the Kiel police confirmed to Nius via telephone that the individual holds dual German and Turkish citizenship.

It remains uncertain whether the suspect’s dual nationality would have been publicly reported if not for the investigative work of Nius.

The case has reignited broader discussions about media reporting and political discourse in Germany. Earlier this year, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister-President, Daniel Günther, sparked controversy during an appearance on the German talk show Markus Lanz. Günther advocated for a social media ban for minors and stricter “quality criteria” for media outlets, singling out Nius by name. He criticized the portal, stating that its articles are “usually nothing right in it” and “completely devoid of facts,” and called for stronger media quality control measures.

Günther’s remarks prompted widespread accusations of authoritarianism and threats to constitutional freedoms across the political spectrum.

Critics argue that Nius’s reporting highlights uncomfortable truths that some government officials and mainstream media have overlooked, particularly regarding crimes committed by Muslim migrants. In the present case, many reports identified the suspect solely as “German,” omitting his Turkish heritage. Nius, by contrast, emphasized the suspect’s dual nationality, asserting that the public deserves accurate and complete information about such cases.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions in Germany over media transparency, political accountability, and the handling of sensitive information related to dual citizenship and ethnicity.
