A disturbing incident has emerged from Chelur in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, where a woman has been arrested for the alleged murder of her 40-day-old grandson.

The accused, identified as Mehboobi, was taken into custody after police investigations indicated that the infant’s death was not natural, as initially claimed. According to authorities, the alleged motive behind the crime was her anger over her granddaughter’s marriage to a Hindu man against her wishes.

The incident reportedly took place on December 24, 2025, at Mehboobi’s residence in Chelur. The newborn was staying there with his mother following his birth. Shortly after the child’s death, Mehboobi informed family members that the baby had developed breathing difficulties and passed away. Believing this explanation, the family conducted the last rites without raising suspicion.

However, doubts soon began to surface. The child’s mother reportedly grew suspicious of Mehboobi’s behaviour and approached the Chelur police, requesting a thorough investigation into the matter.

Following the complaint, police initiated a probe and obtained permission to exhume the infant’s body for a post-mortem examination. The remains were examined in the presence of officials and subsequently sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for detailed analysis.

The FSL report revealed that the infant had died due to suffocation, contradicting the initial claim of a natural death. Investigators also noted inconsistencies in Mehboobi’s statements during questioning, which further intensified suspicion.

During the course of the investigation, police found that Mehboobi was reportedly unhappy with her granddaughter’s interfaith marriage. Officials believe that her disapproval of the relationship, along with resentment over the birth of the child from that union, may have contributed to the alleged crime.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence in the case.
