Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebrations were overshadowed by a series of coordinated Boko Haram attacks on military positions and communities in Adamawa State. The overnight assaults, carried out between September 30 and October 1, reportedly killed soldiers and a forest guard, abducted women and children, and forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes toward safer areas in Gombe.

The attacks targeted communities in Hong and Gombi local government areas, highlighting renewed militant activity along the Kopre–Sambisa forest corridor. In Hong, gunmen attacked the 232 Battalion military outpost in Garaha-Mojili shortly before midnight on September 30. Hong Local Government Chairman Dr. Aliyu Yerima Sa’ad said three soldiers and a forest guard were killed during the confrontation, while 10 other soldiers sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Hong for treatment.

The attackers also abducted two women before withdrawing into the surrounding bush. Around the same time, militants raided Dakna in the Dugwaba District, close to the Sambisa Forest boundary, where they reportedly abducted two additional women and an eight-year-old child.

The violence continued on October 1 in Zangula, a Christian community in Guyaku Ward of Gombi Local Government Area. According to reports, Boko Haram fighters approached from the Kopre mountain forest corridor, triggering widespread panic among residents.

Families were forced to abandon their homes and begin a difficult journey to safety. Women, children and elderly residents reportedly walked between 25 and 35 kilometres from villages including Guyaku, Balhona, Dongo and Kwalamba in an attempt to reach Gombi town and escape the threat posed by the insurgents.
